To become an effective and successful event photographer like www.smartpicsukeventphotography.com, follow the following five guides that will become answers to questions you need to always ask yourself.
What is this event about?
The first step is to recognize what this event is about. Whether it’s a small, unknown party down in the basement of a nerd attended by only 15 people, always find out what the party is about. Find out before attending. The moment you arrive, your job has begun.
Understanding the event will help you in guiding where you should look and what to expect. Ask for the itinerary or schedule. Run through it with the person in charge and make sure you are ready when it happens.
Why is this important?
Next is to know why the event is worth capturing. Is someone getting an award? Is it someone’s 80th birthday? Know the significance of it to the person who will receive or see the pictures.
Sometimes these pictures will be used to further market the event for future parties. The point is to show others how fun or interesting it was, so hopefully they can attend next time.
How should you prepare?
As an event photographer, preparation is important. Getting ready for the event includes preparing a suitable attire to attend it. If it’s a formal party, wear a decent formal suit. If it’s a fun birthday party, wearing casual clothes are sufficient.
Prepare your gears, too. Bring along an extra camera in case things go wrong. Make sure that the memory card is empty and ready for use. Bring necessary lenses that allow you to zoom into speakers, and wide lens to capture a wide hall.
Ask for a copy of the itinerary and do a quick scan of it, memorize some if possible. You’ll have to check them again when you arrive to make sure that everything is as planned.
Who are the main figures?
Ask who are the people you should pay extra attention to. Who are the main sponsors of this event? Who are the children of the grandma? These are important people that your client definitely wants to see in the pictures aside from the obvious main character of the event.
Pay attention to what they do and how they react to certain things or events. A clear expression of happiness, tears of joy, or surprise are some of the most precious moment to capture.
Other guests are also important, although most events don’t require you to take a picture of each guest.
When should you arrive?
At least an hour earlier. Ideally, arriving before everybody else is the best. You should be able to arrive early to take pictures of the hall or room. You will also need to take pictures of guests arriving, so getting there early is a plus.
Run the schedule before the event. Ensure that everything is going as planned and that you are ready at the right place to capture the moments.
